Manteca –
The first two-story classroom buildings in Manteca in more than 56 years could be ready for students by the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
The classroom facilities at East Union High and Manteca High are targeted for completion in July 2025, 19 months from now.
The last time there were second floor classrooms used in Manteca Unified was in 1968 as part of the mission-style structure that included the iconic Manteca High tower.
After the state deemed it unsafe in an earthquake, the building was demolished in 1969.
Work at East Union is currently focusing on the classroom building foundation.
At the same time, the small gym replacement work is now centered on its footings. There is also underground work in progress at the East Union campus.
The foundation excavation phase is underway at Manteca High classroom site as well as the installation of underground facilities.
The two-story 26 classroom building at East Union will be anchored with a modern and expansive media center that will dominate the view of the campus from the busy Union Road thoroughfare.
The classrooms are being built with the ability to make as much of the space as possible a learning tool such as walls that double as white boards to walls that can be collapsed to combine classroom spaces.
The building is designed to enable the most efficient use and deployment of audio visual equipment and electronic devices.
The current Measure A work — part of an overall $65 million undertaking at East Union and Manteca high schools — will also include building a new small gym at the North Union Road campus as well as a new weight room and indoor PE facility that will also accommodate aerobics and wrestling.
The new small gym should be completed in early 2025.
At Manteca High, work is underway building 20 classrooms in a two-story structure along Mikesell Street.
That is where a cluster of 10 classrooms were built more than two years ago with Measure G bond proceeds. The project also includes a new woodshop.
Once the 2-story classroom is completed, older classrooms in the central part of the campus will be torn down to make way for a second two-story classroom building.
That structure will be built along Sherman Avenue with 32 classrooms connected with a new media center via a student quad. It will be somewhat of a mirror of the 2-story classroom structure now under construction at East Union High on the west side of the campus along Union Road.
C.T. Brayton & Son of Escalon is constructing the current projects at both campuses.
They should be ready just in time for the current sophomore classes to begin their senior year using the new classroom complex.
Voters in 2020 approved the $260 million Measure A bond.
The current projects are the first to be built using proceeds from those bonds
